Mike Summers - November 2012:
The Durango Airport is about 15 miles (20 minutes) southeast of Durango. The airport has five rental car agencies (Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, and National). Here's the airport website: http://www.durangogov.org/index.aspx?nid=202 , and another one for Durango: http://www.durango.com/durango_airports.asp . The three main attractions in Durango are 1) the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, which leaves Durango at 10:00 AM and returns at 3:00 PM. It's schedule is not daily during fall, winter, and spring. Check the website for dates (Website: http://www.durangotrain.com/ ) and costs. The second main attraction in Durango is 2) the Mesa Verde National Park (Website: http://www.nps.gov/meve/index.htm ), which is about 35 miles west of Durango on Highway 160 to the park entrance. Then it's another 21 miles (approximately 45 minutes) past the entrance station along a steep, narrow, winding road to the first view of a cliff dwelling. Here's a couple of other websites: http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/27 and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesa_Verde_National_Park that will give you more information. Telluride, CO is attraction number 3 when flying to Durango. It's about 2 1/2 hours from Durango by going west on Highway 160 then north on Highway 145 to the ski town of Telluride. Here's a tourist website for Telluride: http://www.visittelluride.com/ that includes things to do. The downtown area includes the first bank that Butch Cassidy robbed and many shops (Website: http://www.alltelluride.com/history_museums/historic_downtown_district.php ) that you can check out. Of course, you have to visit the Telluride Brewing Company Taproom (Website: http://www.telluridebrewingco.com/ ). Also check out the Last Dollar Saloon (Website: http://www.lastdollarsaloon.com/ ) for good atmosphere and great food. When you head back to Durango, check out the Carver Brewing Company (Website: http://www.carverbrewing.com/ ) and their Asian Baked Chimichanga or the Mushroom Artichoke Pizza. Also there is the Steamworks Brewing Company (Website: http://steamworksbrewing.com/ ) with their creamy chipotle shrimp tacos. Durango is a nice one, two, or three day trip.
Enjoy!
